Introduction
[ 13/03/2007 ]

The CRG aims to become a major centre in biomedical research. Together with the University Pompeu Fabra, the Municipal Institute for Medical Research of Barcelona and the Centre for Regenerative Medicine, it is integrated into the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB).

The CRG covers a wide spectrum of areas in basic biological research, from the study of gene regulation to the function of genes and proteins in cell structure and behaviour, their influence on the development and life of organisms and their role in human disease. Research is organised into Programmes that include several research groups.

Central core facilities develop new methods and support scientists for the use of advanced instruments and techniques.

The diversity and attractiveness of the research areas creates a competitive environment propitious to undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate training.

• Undergraduate training

The CRG welcomes undergraduate visitors, 'summer students', trainees, and 'diploma students' who become associated with the CRG for training purposes. The total time spent at the CRG on this basis must not exceed twelve months. Such training opportunities are to be discussed directly with Group leaders. Applicants should be associated with an academic institution.
• Graduate training
Our international PhD programme welcomes applications from motivated students from all over the world. The CRG, as a research institute, cannot grant PhD titles, but can establish associations with Universities that can award PhD degrees for experimental work carried out at CRG. The CRG has a partnership with the University Pompeu Fabra (UPF), which offers Masters and PhD programmes in biomedical sciences that can be carried out at the CRG.

The CRG also welcomes graduate students registered in any University for short stays (of up to one year) for training purposes or in the context of a collaborative project.

CRG INTERNATIONAL PhD PROGRAMME

1- Objectives
The CRG international PhD programme aims to provide graduate students from all over the world with the possibility for training and research in the attractive scientific environment of the PRBB (http://www.prbb.org). Our resources, facilities, and staff provide the necessary technical support for the research projects and promote high standard research training for graduate students.

2- Applications
The CRG offers predoctoral fellowships, but sources of extramural funding are welcome and actively pursued.

Laboratories offering a predoctoral position are listed in the CRG web site, along with the name of the person who will directly supervise the graduate student; details about the research interests of each laboratory can be found on the linked web pages.

The CRG will consider candidates enrolling in the Master Program in Biomedical Research at the University Pompeu Fabra as candidates for follow-up PhD studies within the CRG PhD programme.

Application forms can be downloaded directly from the CRG website or are available together with the relevant brochures from the address below. Please complete the application form carefully and return it as soon as possible here.

3- Admission
All applications are evaluated solely on the basis of qualification and scientific potential. In addition to a strong command of the English language all our students need to exhibit a good amount of inquisitiveness, initiative and independent thinking. The program caters to an international student body.

The first assessment is carried out directly by the group leader. Pre-selected candidates will then be interviewed by members of the Graduate Committee. The final admission to the CRG PhD programme will be competitive and decided by the Group Leader advised by the Graduate Committee.

Successful candidates can join the CRG only if they have been awarded either a CRG internal or an external predoctoral fellowship.

4- Duration
The maximum time a student can stay at the CRG is 5 years, independently of the source of funding.
Typically, the PhD thesis has to be completed in 4 years, which may include the masters period if the student has carried out the masters practical work in the same laboratory. Only in exceptional cases and upon the recommendation of the Thesis Advisory Committee can this period be extended beyond the fourth year.

Up to one year postdoctoral position in the same lab can be granted after the defense of the thesis.

5- Training
At the beginning of the PhD period, the student proposes, jointly with the supervisor, a "Thesis Advisory Committee" consisting of his/her CRG supervisor, one group leader from the same program, one from another CRG programme and an external one (often from the academic institution where the student is registered).

The Thesis Advisory Committee follows the progress of the work and provides advice on future directions and decisions.

The student will also receive additional training on scientific writing and oral presentations, as well as to participate in the following activities as integral parts of the PhD programme.

• External seminars: Leading scientists in the various fields represented at the PRBB are invited to present and discuss their latest results and ideas in a series of seminars typically occurring twice a week. These seminars allow PhD students to be informed about the latest developments in different areas of modern biology and offer the unique opportunity for personal discussions with each seminar speaker. PhD students also have the possibility to invite up to 6 seminar speakers of their own choice per year.

• Journal club: Recent publications of general interest are discussed in several journal clubs.

• Data seminars: Students and postdocs present progress in their projects to their colleagues in the institute on a regular basis.

• Workshop: Students are encouraged to organize their own scientific workshops with international participants.

6- Other Student Activities
The PhD students of the International PhD Programme organize sport and social events, including a volley-beach tournament.
