International PhD Programme fellowships

“la Caixa” / Centre de Regulació Genòmica (CRG)
“Genomic Regulation and Disease”

Ten more PhD positions will be available at the Centre de Regulació Genòmica (CRG) of Barcelona (Spain) thanks to the generous support of “la Caixa”, the third largest Spanish financial institution. The CRG is a basic biomedical research centre, created at the initiative of the Catalan Government, with the participation of the Pompeu Fabra University, and the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. The objective of the CRG is to promote excellent basic research in biomedicine and, particularly, in the genomic and proteomic fields. The CRG is located at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB). Research at the CRG is centered around six scientific programs, with extensive interdisciplinary collaborations across the following areas: Computational Biology, Gene Regulation, Cell and Developmental Biology, Cell Differentiation and Cancer, Genes and Disease and Systems Biology. Fellowships will be renewable on yearly basis up to a maximum of four years and stipends will be competitive internationally.

Candidates should hold or anticipate receiving a university degree within the first half of 2010, and should have a strong commitment for scientific research, an excellent academic record and research experience.

Complete applications will be reviewed within a month following the deadline and the short-listed candidates will receive invitations to visit the CRG for a 3 day period of interviews and information exchange that will take place 9-14 weeks after the application deadline. Offers of admission will be made to the successful candidates shortly after the interview period. Selected students will have 1 month to accept the position and a limit of 6 months to begin their thesis work at the CRG.

Application forms are available at the link at the right frame of this page and should be sent here.

A NEW CALL FOR APPLICATIONS WILL OPEN BY THE END OF 2009

"la Caixa" Fellowships Policy

The ”la Caixa” Foundation has initiated a fellowship programme to offer outstanding students from all over the world the chance of taking a PhD in Biomedicine at the Centre de Regulació Genòmica ¯ CRG (Centre for Genomic Regulation).

The ”la Caixa” Foundation is a non-profitmaking organisation, which receives its funding from the third biggest financial entity in Spain, the Caja de Ahorros y Pensiones de Barcelona, ”la Caixa”.  In terms of budget and business volume, the ”la Caixa” Foundation is among the ten most important Foundations in the world.

Since 1982, the ”la Caixa” Foundation has run various fellowship programmes to enable Spanish students to study postgraduate courses in Spain and other countries. In these twenty-five years, thousands of students have been able to develop their studies thanks to a fellowship from the Foundation.

In 2008, the ”la Caixa” Foundation set up a new programme, in this case for Spanish and international students, through which 10 four-year fellowships to do a Biomedicine PhD at the CRG will be awarded every year during 4 years.

Under the programme, each holder of a fellowship will receive over these four years a total of 121,000 euros gross, paid entirely by the ”la Caixa” Foundation. This generous sum makes this fellowship programme one of the most highly competitive that exists in the biomedical research field.

The fellowships, therefore, are aimed at highly motivated students, who are committed to scientific progress and have an excellent grounding in theoretical questions. The candidates chosen will become part of research groups consisting of top-flight scientists and will be working at the frontiers of biomedical research.

The ”la Caixa” Foundation has chosen the CRG to initiate this programme because of the excellence of its research projects, the international nature of its scientific teams, the quality of its technological equipment, the inter-disciplinary nature of its projects and the abundance of its articles published in top-ranking scientific journals and media.
